THE POPPY WAR, R.F. Kuang, HarperVoyager ed.

PLOT 4/4 - CHARACTERS 4/4 - LANGUAGE 3/4 - ENVIRONMENTS 3/4

"War does not define who is right, war defines who remains". And Rin would have chosen it without ever turning to think. Because she was fire, she was anger, she was a weapon. She was the Phoenix. She craved for revenge. Nothing could have changed that: neither defeat, nor fear, nor suffering. Fang Runin, known as Rin, is a young orphan, already determined and courageous, coming from a district of farmers and peasants, where poverty and ignorance reign. Her life is full of violence and illegality: her stepmother does not spare her beatings and traffics in opium. Determined to escape from the fate disposed by her adoptive parents, she manages to do the impossible by passing the exam to enter a very selective and severe military school: Sinegard. During a fight, Rin discovers that she can control fire. Thus, enveloped in lethal flames, her story comes to life. The writing is fluent, but the language sometimes becomes very vulgar and there are harsh and strong descriptions. There is no shortage of twists, strong emotions and suspense that lead the reader to quickly "devour" the book. The plot is captivating and the characters induce fear and respect. The beauty of this book is a sort of balance in which the most shocking moments are followed by almost comic moments, which make everything less heavy. Suitable for age 14 and up. R.F. Kuang is a Chinese writer born on May 29, 1996. She sells the copy rights of "The Poppy War" at the age of 19. In 2019 "The Dragon Republic", second novel, is released, and in 2020 she publishes" The Burning God ". "The Poppy War" is therefore the first volume of a trilogy.
